This is the first experiment in my dissertation project.
I am testing whether mysteries capture people's attention.
People will read stories. Early in the story, a mystery will appear. Immediately after, a solution to the mystery or a neutral sentence that does not solve the mystery will appear. Then a few sentences will build on the mystery. After that, a short episode.
I use an on-line recognition paradigm. I ask people whether they remember a probe word from earlier in the story. The probe word is a word that captures the content of the mystery.
After each story is a comprehension check question.
There are also filler stories. The filler stories also have probe words.
For practice, people will complete an 80-item lexical decision task

In this task participants are required to memorise and recall number series in order. Participants start out with three 3-digit sequences. If participants correctly recall 2 out of 3 three sequences, they progress to 4-digit sequence trials and so on. If participants respond incorrectly on 2/3 trials the experiment terminantes. This experiment is based on the original digit span experiment by Jacobs (1887).
