  • Blackboard Assets

This experiment functions as an "asset pack", meaning the "assets" folder is full of useful free-use stuff for you to use to give your experiments a chalk-drawn look . Give it a run to see for yourself!

    Background

The background image is courtesy of Francesco Ungaro on Pexels. You can use it as the background in your experiment version 2023.1.0 or later via the Screen tab in Experiment Settings, in earlier versions you will need to create an Image component in each routine.

    Icons

The icons folder contains hand-drawn icons from limofetus on itch.io, as these are white you can change their color in an Image component by changing the "color" parameter.

    Fonts

The experiment includes some examples of fonts which work well with a blackboard aesthetic. All of these are available free via Google Fonts, which means you can refer to them by name and PsychoPy will go off and fetch the font file without any need for you to install it. If you would prefer to have them installed however, for example if you're running on a lab PC with no internet connection, the fonts folder contains all of the .ttf files needed to install them.

    Colors

The polygons at the bottom of the experiment show the colors used in the image assets, for a consistent look it's best to stick to these colors for any shapes or text you add to your experiment. Click here to view the color scheme on coolors, a handy web tool for making and sharing color schemes.

  • Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART)

    The experiment: ——

This is a simplified (and prettified) version of the BART task by Lejuez et al (2002). Participants have to blow up a balloon that they know will burst at some point. They ‘earn’ rewards for getting the balloons to be larger, but increase the risk of bursting it, in which case they earn no reward for that balloon. The question is, how many times does someone pump each balloon trying to optimise their rewards.

The measure is designed to quantify individual differences in risk-taking.

    Analysing your data: ——

You should filter out data where the balloon burst and measure the number of pumps made for the remaining trials.

    Notes: ——

WARNING: This is an advanced demo involving lots of code components

This can be extended to be more similar to the original paper by adding further colours of balloons with different bursting profiles.

  • This is a simple Lexical decision task. A fixation cross will be displayed in the centre of the screen. Following this 2 text stimuli will then appear, and the participant will have to respond if they are words or non words pressing ‘w’ if they are both words or ‘n’ if one or more is not a real word. This will be repeated 36 times for the main trial. Reaction time and accuracy will be recorded, and congruent and incongruent pairs will be compared. • In this task participants are required to memorise and recall number series in order. Participants start out with three 3-digit sequences. If participants correctly recall 2 out of 3 three sequences, they progress to 4-digit sequence trials and so on. If participants respond incorrectly on 2/3 trials the experiment terminantes. This experiment is based on the original digit span experiment by Jacobs (1887).
